Description of Services:
Men and Women’s Education Initiative - reaches out to some of the most at-risk populations- young gay men, Latinos, and African Americans- to educate about the latest information about HIV infection rates, medical care, cure research, and the effects of HIV- related stigma. This program includes community-wide HIV education and awareness forums targeting specific at-risk populations. LIVE Advocacy Series – community seminars that address current issues related to HIV through panel discussions and public input provide the latest information on laws pertaining to HIV/AIDS, the latest developments in cure research, and other relevant topics current to the discussion of HIV/AIDS. In addition, participants are directed to HIV-related information from a variety of reputable scientific, educational, and community resources. University Anti-Stigma Campaign – month long intensive HIV education and awareness campaign to inform young adults about HIV, the negative effects of stigma, and what they can do to reduce both within their communities. The campaign includes meetings with key student groups, training students to educate other students, viral marketing, data gathering, and a university-wide symposium on the last day: Anti-Stigma Day. The campaign serves as one of the main foundations of LIVE’s ongoing research into HIV-related stigma and the efficacy of anti-stigma interventions. This program has been replicated with great success at the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, and Rice University. Needle Prick Project – an online HIV awareness campaign designed to stimulate conversation about the reality of HIV today and HIV- related stigma, and encourage HIV testing. The first part is the “Get Pricked” Photo Project, an online photo essay campaign involving individuals photographed with the “Get Pricked” logo and pledging to talk about HIV with their family and friends. The photos are shared on the Needle Prick Project website and through various social media sites. The second part is the “Needle Prick” Profile Series, a weekly editorial campaign featured in the Advocate, a national Gay and Lesbian Magazine, which centers on personal experiences with HIV and features a wide range of perspectives in an effort to put a face to the virus and create an ongoing dialogue of real life experiences with HIV. Stigma Research Initiative – performs research on the stigma associated with HIV and the interventions used to reduce stigma. Under the direction of Dr. Michael Ross, a renowned expert and professor in the field of HIV at the University of Texas School of Public Health, LIVE’s stigma research focuses on HIV+ gay and bisexual men’s thoughts, reactions, expectations, and experiences- both in being stigmatized because they are HIV+ and the internalization of stigmatizing discourses.
